Feature: Bombshell Beautician, Tiffany Griffith

Mountain View, CA

This former Google associate program manager has dabbled in many industries from fashion design, to cosmetics and even graphic design. After years and years of career hits and misses, Tiffany Griffith finally found her calling as a hair stylist.

After receiving a bachelor of fine arts from the Academy of Art University in fashion design, Tiffany realized that designing clothes was a tough industry to break into and started pursuing cosmetics and make-up artistry.

Years later when she had her son, she decided that it wasn’t for her anymore and started working in graphic design for eBay. After working freelance for a few years, she then took her skills to Google, where she worked in event planning, facilitation, organization, sponsorships and payment.

Soon after, she realized that all her creativity was getting sucked dry and she didn’t want to be stuck in a place where she basically just went to work everyday… That’s when her son’s Godmother convinced her to pursue her aspirations and go to beauty school.

She then attended the Academy for Salon Professionals and started an apprenticeship at the James Craig Hair Color and Design salon in Saratoga, which gave her a more advanced education. Noticing that it was difficult for many of her referrals to get to Saratoga because of the distance, she finally found her way to Allure Salon in Mountain View, where she works now.

At Allure, Tiffany does many things. She is a Redken certified colorist, and she loves doing color: “If someone said out of hair, color, or make-up, and you could only pick one to do forever, what would you do? I would say color. I really like to sit someone down and really talk to them about what they need and what they want, and working with them to create a better them. Bringing their vision to light is something I really enjoy, especially working with someone from start to finish.”

She also believes that a consultation is the most important thing you can do. Tiffany says, “I feel like a lot of hair stylists nowadays kind of get in an auto-pilot mode with clients, especially if they’re regular clients, so I always makes sure to ask them what they like and what they would like to try. Listening to your client is key.”

Most highly recommended styling tools
A good blow dryer with a nozzle and a round brush

You can get a cheap blow dryer anywhere, but they just don’t dry your hair like they should, and a nozzle is key. Nozzles direct the air flow and helps smooth the hair. It helps your hair lay smooth and be more manageable, bending how you would want it to bend. Without one, your hair will end up looking something like a Christmas tree.

And don’t forget a round brush! Make sure it’s the right size brush because it works wonders for anybody.

Favorite hair product
Redken Extreme Iron Repair and Pureology Colour Stylist Anti-Split Blowdry Styling Cream

The one thing that everyone who blow dries their hair should have is a blow dry lotion or a heat protector, and remember that quality products are important. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that if you can buy them at a drugstore, they’re probably not the best product. These products will help protect your hair and they will also help cut down the frizz.

Favorite coloring process
Ombre

The ombre is my newest favorite! The process is faster and there’s little to no maintenance, which is very convenient for herself and especially her clients.

Key advice for fellow hair stylists
Education

Education is huge. Jennifer (Allure’s owner) says, “I constantly take classes and go places to learn new things. At my salon, we have continued education. If a new product line comes out we’ll learn about it and talk about it. Educators, like Sam Villa, will come in and teach us new things.”

Roots of inspiration
Fashion design background and different places

My background in fashion design has really helped me draw inspiration from all different places. It helps me with the learning process of how to form a collection. I also draws inspiration from street fashion, graffiti and all the sights around me.

Favorite project
Color pops

With the latest fad of attaching feathers in your hair, I decided to look into how they were supplied. I soon found out that the roosters used for feathers die after one short year of life. I decided that there was a need for an alternative. That’s when she came up with color pops. I took extensions and dyed them to look like feathers! They’re completely animal friendly and very similar to feathers. And because they’re extensions, they’re not permanently in your hair. This offers clients something more customizable.

Favorite past-times
Live music, movies, the beach and hanging out

I just love hanging out with my son and my boyfriend. I love live music and going to the movies. You can also catch me surfing at the beach or going out on the lake.

So if you’re ready to have everyone compliment you on your hair, go see Tiffany. She’s able to offer services that not all stylists can, like make-up which gives her an added bonus. She prides herself on helping out her clients. She says, “Its an amazing accomplishment to make people feel amazing without much maintenance. I love working with people who are totally ready for a new change.

An Exclusive Gathering: San Francisco

OpezSan Francisco, California

On November 9th, Opez had the privilege of hosting a group of the most exceptional service professionals in San Francisco, from hair sylists to personal trainers, acupuncturists to make-up artists.

The event was a star-studded night to remember, beginning with the venue – a hidden gem of a gym, Accelerate Sports Performance, graciously opened to us by the proprietors and top athletic trainers, Jack Cooney and Ron Martin.

Accelerate Sports Performance

Behind ASP’s unassuming, ivied walls, the top practitioners of their respective professional trades gathered in the presence of grand decor and warm reception.  The themes of friendly company, personal enrichment, and mutual exchange pervaded the atmosphere, making for lively conversation, boisterous laughter, and memorable moments.  Thanks also go to Blue Salud Events for creating the right environment to catalyze such interactions, including a wonderful photo booth, and Carlotta Wines for deepening our appreciation for local, Californian wines.

Photo Booth

In keeping with Opez’s mission of empowering individual service professionals by helping them to market themselves, build customer relationships, and connect with one another, Jeff Riddle (whose blog, theGiveGive is a must-read for anybody interested in building client relationships) was present as the resident expert in customer relationship strategy, fresh off an appearance at a similarly-themed conference at the United Nations.

The result of these combined factors was a unique, multi-disciplinary event spanning industry lines, with the common, uniting goals of exceptional achievement and personal empowerment.  With nearly 100 attendees, 13 service industries represented, an average of 8 new connections per person made throughout the course of the night (with a mix of professional referrals for future leads, as well as outright customer leads), not to mention the knowledge shared and visibility gained, we consider the event to be a phenomenal success, and hope that this success will continue to bear fruit for all involved in the future.

A selection of San Francisco’s finest in attendance:
Brandon Webster (Hair Stylist)
Nikol Elaine (Make-up Artist)
Vincent Kan (Acupuncturist)
Robbi Shveyd (Nutritionist, Personal Trainer)
Anita Lang-Baker (Acupuncturist)
Maria Lee (Make-up Artist)
Jenn Pattee (Personal Trainer)

Feature: “Just show up” (Charlie Reid)

San Francisco, CA

At first glance, you’d never think that Charlie Reid was your former fat-kid. If you ask him what motivated him to lose the extra pounds, he’ll tell you about his chubby childhood.

It all started at birth. You see, Charlie was born as a fraternal twin, and as a kid, his brother was the skinny one while he was the fat one.

So when push came to shove, Charlie made the decision to trim the excess fat. He began with a simple high school gym membership, and after losing more than 50 pounds in one year, Charlie was motivated to change his life completely.

He then pursued a bachelors of science in kinesiology from San Diego State University. He concentrated on competitive strength athletics and worked as an intern in the strength and conditioning department. His passion as an undergrad led him to train and compete in Olympic-style weightlifting, kettlebell sport, and strongman competitions.

He then shifted gears after graduating college, and started working as a postural therapist at the Egoscue Method: an exercise therapy clinic where a client’s posture is evaluated and a custom list of exercises is given to help them manage their own pain and movement limitations. This completely changed his method of training. Charlie is now a proponent of combining functional fitness training with alignment principles that help the body get stronger and more fit, while reducing the risk of injury.

What is functional training you might ask? He says, “It’s the absolute opposite of the body building style of training – it’s actually training full, total body movement and core strengthening techniques. The movements then translate to your everyday functions. It is also more effective for fat loss and improving athletic performance because you aren’t sitting on a machine and pushing levers. You have to use your whole body in a coordinated effort, which means you burn more calories and get stronger in a way that will carry over to life and sport” And why? “[Because] the body doesn’t work in isolation so I don’t train the body like that.”

This is what sets him apart from other personal trainers. He’s very particular and very keen on alignment, and using alignment and body awareness to keep people healthy. He doesn’t treat pain but he teaches people how to move better, and thus, he’s able to teach them how to avoid injuring themselves or habitually getting into cycles of chronic pain.

However, if you’re thinking that Charlie will take it easy on you, know that he will still push you and that he helps you come to the realization that you’re doing it all on your own and that he only helps with guidance through the process.

He uses a coaching style that teaches you how to set more manageable goals to keep yourself consistent and keep you moving forward. He sets up actionable steps that will help you maintain your ways throughout your life with very manageable methods.

Favorite Exercise
The Turkish Get-up (check it out here)
This exercise seems crazy, and from the outside looking in you might ask, “what muscle does that work?!” The answer of course is that it works your entire body. It also has a cool name! The Turkish Get-up strengthens your entire body in one movement, from fingers to toes, every muscle in your body gets a workout. The other reason Charlie likes this exercise is that many of his clients get paralyzed with too many exercise choices or make up excuses each day to not get a good workout in. The solution is to keep things simple and manageable. Try doing Turkish Get-ups for 10 minutes straight and you’ll get a great full body workout that will make you sweat, get you stronger, and more flexible! Charlie believes that the job of a good coach is to make exercise work with someone’s life and, in a city like San Francisco where everybody leads incredibly overbooked and stressed out lives, we don’t have all day to exercise. Quick and effective workouts are often the solution to this problem. Try doing Turkish Get-ups or any other full body exercise for 10 minutes and watch the pounds come off.

Recommended Dietary Needs
Whole food-based multivitamins and fish oil-And if you’re vegan, consider taking flax seed oil, chia seeds, or anything with a high omega-3 fat content. These supplements not only help boost your metabolism and help with cardiovascular health, but they have also been shown to help with mood and motivation, which is certainly a plus.

Favorite Pastimes
Playing as a session bassist in local bands and competing in the Highland Games -That’s right, Charlie celebrates his Scottish and Celtic culture and heritage by testing his strength in the caber toss. Charlie says, “You basically pick up a log, run with it and throw it.”That’s pretty intense if you ask me.

Favorite Quote
“Just show up”
By just making it a point to do something everyday, whatever it is, really means the most in making a change. The best exercise is the one that you do and do consistently. People often do not reach their goals because they do not break down their goals in actionable and manageable steps. They will often try to bite off more than they can chew, go full force into it and burn out within 2-4 weeks, only to gain back all the weight or backslide on their progress. The key is to show up and do something everyday even if it’s only 10 minutes a day. Something everyday is better than nothing. In the words of General George S. Patton, “a good plan executed today is better than a perfect plan executed tomorrow”.

What the People Are Saying
Katy J. says, “I am a strength and conditioning coach in SF and I’ve watched Charlie for nearly a year, working with clients from every walk of life. His focused, creative approach is engaging and the level of care he provides is phenomenal!  He has charisma, patience, and determination. I can’t help but note that at the end of every session, his people leave sweaty and smiling.

Charlie is a tremendously valuable resource in the saturated fitness industry. Simply put; Charlie is a shining star.”

Cory C. says, “What sets Charlie apart in the world of personal training is vast experience in many different types of exercise and exercise therapy and his ability to connect with you individually in a way that supports sustained change in life habits and lifestyle.

Charlie has all the basics of personal training mastered, but he adds his background in biomechanics and postural therapy to provide a unique blend of butt kicking, pound shredding workouts with measurable gains to functional flexibility and strength.

He is able to audit your unique physical abilities and then he works with you over the course of each session to improve function and strength in problem areas. Exercises/stretches you do with Charlie can have magic infomercial-like effects. I never thought I’d be able to touch my toes, since my hands only went down to my mid-shin at best, until Charlie explained it was an issue with my hip flexors rather than my hamstrings which is what everyone always tells you to work on. Several hundred inch worms, v-ups and RDLs later I can touch the floor.

Charlie makes you feel comfortable with your own abilities and then pushes you to get better in a manner that is never judgmental. I look forward to my sessions with Charlie even though I know they are going to be tough because he is a great guy to be around and I know the results will be tangible and rewarding.
If you’re looking for someone other than your usual meat-head PT, Charlie is your guy.”

So if you’re thinking about getting into shape, do yourself a favor and go see Charlie, especially if you’re ready to take the commitment and make some positive life changes!

Oh, and just in case you were wondering… His twin brother is now the one out of shape… oh, the irony!

Feature: Bartending Mash-ups

San Francisco, CA

If you ask this Bay Area native about his background in bartending, he’ll tell you it was a product of his passion: drinking and playing loud music!

This San Franciscan and his brother, Danilo Bravo, began by organizing and DJing local parties. After getting really involved in the music scene and building ties with many DJs and promoters, Jasen finally started bartending.

Turns out it’s a perfect fit! Jasen draws inspiration from seeing people have fun. It’s what motivates him. Jasen says, “I genuinely like to see people have a good time because it puts them in a different atmosphere so you can see the best in them outside of the workplace.”

He finds a way to personalize his interactions with individuals to cater to their needs, while managing to stay himself. It’s his attention to detail that helps him become a better bartender.

“That’s why I like Opez so much, because they focus on the people and they try to raise the bar on customer service. The movement is really cool because you always know what to expect as far as customer service from that person,” says Jasen.

Feature: Italian Belle mixes it up with Mixology

Anaheim, CA

When it comes to Charlotparis Le, there’s one thing to keep in mind: she’s not your average bartender. This Vietnamese vixen is a connoisseur of mixology.

What is mixology, you might ask? Charlotparis says, “It’s like being a bar chef. It’s making your own recipes and discovering new flavors that aren’t out there yet.” And that’s exactly what she’s been doing. She’s been creating her own stuff and throwing parties that are unique to her clients.

Charlotparis’s passion for mixology began shortly after she started bartending. She loved the idea of being able to customize drinks to appeal to all audiences and make everybody happy.

Charlotparis draws inspiration from Dario Comimi, an Italian bar chef who has written a lot of books on mixology, and the Euro-mixology scene. Her eagerness grew after meeting a few people from the United Kingdom (including Jeremy Fetouaki) and Multisensory Mixologist from Hong Kong, Antonio Lai, who inspired Charlotparis and helped her discover the trade.

Recently, she has partnered up with party planners who absolutely adore her involvement in creating themes and decorations for events, customizing everything from the drinks to their garnishes.

Don’t take it from us! Here are a couple of customer testimonials:
Not only is Ms. Charlotparis beautiful, but she is professional and makes great atmosphere and presentation… I wish I could get her to come to Nevada for our parties and after-parties. There is no-one else like her.
– Charles Leftwich, CEO Emerald Productions LLC, Nevada

As an owner of a Concierge business, I had the opportunity to meet many…bartenders or mixologists. Charlotparis is one of the few individuals that stood out among the rest … [for] her commitment to giving you great customer service and a drink that fits your taste. Charlotparis is truly dedicated to her profession, always keeping herself informed about new industry trends, products and techniques. Anyone who is fortunate enough to work with or served by Charlotparis will walk away with a pleasurable experience and greater understanding of the beautiful art of Mixology.
- Jimmy, Business Owner

So if you’re ever in need of a mixologist for your private party or just a good drink, keep Charlotparis in mind. She pays special attention to what people want and what they like. Fanecdote: Mark Connelly (Mont Blanc)

Boston, MA

Here’s a quick ‘fanecdote’:  More than a year ago, I purchased a collector’s edition pen from the Mont Blanc at Copley Square in Boston, MA for my brother’s college graduation.  Just today, I get a call from a gentleman there named Mark Connelly, letting me know that a matching set is about to come out and that, as a previous customer, I could get a first look at it.

Great stuff, Mark, keep it up!  (You, too, Mont Blanc!)

P.S. Sorry for the hiatus – we’ll be back in full force, now!

Feature: Alberto, Marathon Man of Mountain View

Alberto: Marathon Man

Double-Time: Alberto @ Cantankerous Fish

Mountain View, CA

With his consistently cheery disposition and jolly figure, this superb bartender may not seem very hardcore. Little might you suspect that Alberto is the Marathon Man of Mountain View, at least in bartending circles.

As his moniker suggests, Alberto runs marathons in his spare time, a hobby which he has maintained for more than ten years. He has accomplished a healthy personal best of 3 hours and 48 minutes (well below the national average of about 4 hours and 32 minutes).

However, Alberto also maintains this pace even as he works.  He often begins the day behind the bar at Cantankerous Fish in Mountain View, CA, around 11 a.m., before hopping over to Cascal next door around 4 p.m. to close it down near 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.  He frequently works these 15-hour days, and racks up nearly 72-hour workweeks, earning him the title of the Marathon Man of Mountain View.

Home region:
Italy

Specialty drink:
Mojito Martini (you gotta try this!)

Favorite wines:
Californian whites

When not marathoning at work or on the road:
Salsa dancing

Days off:
Tuesday and Wednesday

We tried to keep up with Alberto one weekend, but he left us in the dust. We leave it to you, loyal reader, to chase him down and spend some time getting to know him and enjoy his company and drinks!

Feature: Tanya, Manager at Barracuda Sushi

Tanya at Barracuda MVMountain View, CA

We first met Tanya when we showed up at the Barracuda Sushi in Mountain View for their inaugural buffet lunch.  Before we even had a chance bury ourselves in the food, she already began asking us how we liked the setup and the greeting party.  We knew immediately that this was a dedicated service professional.

We’ve come back many times since then, and to be perfectly honest, it’s the service that brings us back in the door, time and again.  Whenever we can, we come when Tanya’s working, just to say hi.

Most memorable service experience:
Remembering our names, drink, and soup (yes, soup) preferences after one visit

Worst customer experience:
Customers coming late to their buffet, forcing them to stay open to accommodate

Side hobbies:
Kickboxing instructor slash interior designer (and not the other way around)

Favorite quotation:
“Bring your friends!  We’ll take care of them.”

So, friends, the next time you’re in Mountain View, definitely stop in to say hi to Tanya.  And ask her about her Maltese dog (it’s adorable).

In your service,
